Haute yarn collection launched by ex Alexander McQueen Director of Sustainability, Audrey Clavedon.
Plain Material brings the quality, luxury and elegance of Haute couture collections to the artisan knitting community with the launch of Monday, their pure silk yarn.
Under the guidance of founder Audrey Clavedon, former director of Sustainability at Alexander McQueen, Plain Material’s curated collection will bring knitters access to the rarest and best quality yarns, empowering them to create heirloom pieces that stand the test of time:
“Each yarn in Plain Material's debut collection is meticulously selected for its superior quality, its durability and its single-material composition. This ensures that every piece crafted with Plain Material yarn exudes unparalleled luxury and refinement that can be enjoyed for decades. From the moment the yarn touches your fingertips, you will feel the sumptuous texture and unmatched softness that sets Plain Material apart."
– Audrey Clavedon, Founder of Plain Material
With the fashion world still focused on fleeting trends, Plain Material stands as a bastion of meticulous craftsmanship and enduring style. From their 100% pure brushed silk sourced from an Italian artisan to their upcoming cashmere due to launch later this year, their debut collection will appeal to both novice knitters and seasoned artisans seeking to produce knitwear of Haute standing.
The Yarn
Plain Material launches its debut collection on September 10, 2024 with ‘Monday’, a 100% silk yarn sourced from small family-run milliners in Italy, favoured suppliers to the high-end fashion houses. It is available in a curated palette of just 11 colours, hand selected by Clavedon:
"I've spent over a decade immersed in the world of fashion and luxury, an inspiring community renowned for its resilience to change. Drawing on this extensive experience, I set out to source a yarn that surpasses luxury standards. Our brushed silk yarn is the result of this journey, 15 years of expertise in sustainable fashion and luxury woven into the finest and most delicate fibre. It brings our customers closer to the raw materials and delivers the ultimate luxury experience. That’s why we named it Monday: to mark the debut of a truly exceptional yarn, an ode to silk itself, cherished by the finest designers for centuries. It is unlike anything I have seen before."
Monday will be followed up with a cashmere yarn due to launch on November 10, 2024.

About Plain Material, and Audrey Clavedon
Plain Material is the home of Haute yarn, celebrating the beauty of slow craftsmanship with a curated collection of exquisite, luxury fibres.
Founder, and Lead Curator is ex Director of Sustainability at Alexander McQueen, Audrey Clavedon. Having spent over a decade immersed in the world of fashion and luxury brands she is well versed in Haute couture craftmanship, but it wasn’t until she had her daughter that she discovered knitting for herself. Driven to create her own heirloom pieces that could be handed down, she set out to source a yarn worthy of the task.
Plain Material was created to bring these Haute yarns to the artisan knitting community, providing customers with the same standard of quality and luxury in raw materials upheld in fashion house collections, and Audrey’s own pieces.
Sourcing Principles
Plain Material’s founder Audrey Clavedon brings a wealth of sourcing and sustainability expertise to the brand through her decades of work as a Sustainability Director for fashion houses and global retailers including L’Oreal and Amazon. Her impactful initiatives have included pioneering biodiversity projects in the fashion space and decarbonisation of the supply chain which have helped to inform both the creative and sourcing principles behind Plain Material.
“We pride ourselves on sourcing the finest yarns from experienced artisans. Our commitment to quality and longevity ensures that each fibre is carefully selected for its exceptional properties, guaranteeing unmatched softness, durability, and elegance.”
